After years of making repairs from flood damage, the gardens have reopened and are ready for you to take your own romantic boat ride among the lily pads. Thanks to its charming historic downtown, antebellum homes, and idyllic waterfront vistas, it's no surprise that Charleston is a popular location for TV shows and movies to film. But one of the most iconic films to use Charleston as its backdrop is undoubtedly The Notebook. While Nicholas Sparks originally set the book in New Bern, North Carolina, the movie places Noah and Allie in Seabrook, South Carolina, a small town about an hour south of Charleston.

This home has the kind of authentic Southern charm that would be no stranger to the characters from the movie. When Noah’s renovation project is over, we see the house pretty much as it is today. The production team only added a side porch and the blue shutters to match Allie’s vision for the house.

The property had a 100-year history of being an agricultural hub. A small ferry carried people and crops to the mainland, and the island had its own post office, telephone system, currency, and school. In 1989, five partners purchased the 900-acre tract to preserve the habitat and create a retreat for their families. The house is a private residence that has been in the family for decades, if not generations. It’s a sprawling southern beauty with 4,255 square feet, five bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, and multiple fireplaces.
The scenes depicting Allie’s lavish summer house were filmed in Boone Hall Plantation at Mount Pleasant. Boone Hall is one of the oldest still functional plantations in America with a history that goes back well over three centuries. In the Nicholas Sparks book, the story was set in New Bern, NC, a small river town near the coast.
The scene above is where Allie, Noah and their friends go swim at a lake. The lake is also located inside the Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens property and you can see it from far if you go on the hay ride that is also included with admission. Although they could have used South Carolina beaches for this scene, it was actually filmed in California, at El Matador Beach, in Malibu. Unfortunately, since this is a private residence, they don't offer tours.

There are many unforgettable moments from the Notebook — Allie and Noah lying on the road, their chats in the nursing home, and that kiss, of course.
Cypress Gardens
In Broadway by Design, BroadwayWorld is shining a spotlight on the stellar designs of this Broadway season, show by show. That was shot at Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The geese that were portrayed in the shot weren’t native to the area, so the birds were brought in and had to be trained to follow the boat and appear on screen at the appropriate time. Cypress Garden’s scenes were filmed during January so as to avoid the alligators, which were hibernating at the time. In the case of The Notebook house, the house used for filming does exist and someone currently lives in it.
Road construction and maintenance projects
It’s a private home, so I’m sure I don’t need to remind you not to disturb the residents. With it getting so much screen time you may have been wondering to yourself, “Where is the house from ‘The Notebook’? ” Like many great films, the filmmakers shot on location in South Carolina. When the house is ready, it’s everything she has dreamed about and more. He puts it on sale, and people flock to the plantation offering him huge sums of money. But Noah has no intention to sell the house — he just wants Allie to notice it.
Southern Living magazine toured the property two years ago, with Ms Ailstock showing the journalist around. The owner revealed in 2020 that the camera crew only used the exterior of the property, and never ventured inside for any shots. But the house was never a true fixer-upper, although a large part of the 2004 movie showed Noah toiling on it. Meanwhile, while this story is playing out in the past, we also cut back and forth to the present, where an old man named Duke (James Garner) is telling the love story of Noah and Allie to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home. If you haven't seen the movie or read the Nicholas Sparks book that inspired it, I won't spoil how the past and present stories connect. Just know that the film is tailor-made to make you cry your damn eyes out by the time the end credits roll. "Blending the lighting and video designs together was a challenge," added Mackinnon. "One of our largest challenges was building a set that allows for the full realization of this scene between Noah and Allie in the rain, complete with actual water raining on stage," explained Zinn and Banakis. The scene where Allie and Noah are lying watching the traffic light occurs at King and Mary Streets in downtown Charleston.
The musical features a score by multiplatinum singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson. For scenic designers David Zinn and Brett J. Banakis, it was with the concept of memory. Sorry, Seabrook Islanders, the Old Village neighborhood of Mount Pleasant was the actual setting for the town of Seabrook Island. The 1996 Nicholas Sparks’ novel from which the film was adapted was set in the town of New Bern, North Carolina. The College of Charleston was used for the scenes where Rachel McAdams’ character Allie Hamilton is attending college at New York’s Sarah Lawrence College. The rowboat scene in The Notebook was located at Cypress Gardens. This was my favorite spot to tour, and I would definitely visit again. You have the opportunity to take a self-guided boat tour, which goes through the same area that Noah and Allie explored. The inside of Allie’s summer home was filmed at Williams Mansion, which used to be known as Calhoun Mansion. As well as seeing the inside of Allie’s Summer Home, the tour will show you what being part of the wealthiest class in Charleston would have felt like. Noah takes Allie boating through a flock of geese at Cypress Gardens, 3030 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, another location seen in Cold Mountain and The Patriot, along with Swamp Thing.

The filming of the house’s exterior was done on Wadmalaw Island, SC, at what’s known as Bears Bluff Plantation or Martins Point. But the town where the movie was supposed to be set was called Seabrook, SC. The summer house of Allie’s monied family is the Boone Hall Plantation, 1235 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant, about eight miles north of Charleston.
This beautiful place is called Oak Avenue and it’s located inside the Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens property. Just like the house, you need to take the tour to be able to see Oak Avenue. While we don’t deviate from the original recipes too much, what makes Fortune House different from other establishments is our approach. It wasn’t until Hoban left Ireland and emigrated to America that he had a chance meeting with President George Washington in Charleston in 1791. L’Enfant envisioned a majestic house roughly four times the size of the current White House. The residence of the president of the United States is a large neoclassical federal-style mansion, with details echoing Greek classical architecture. Despite two hundred years of disaster, discord, and remodelings, the original design of the immigrant Irish builder, James Hoban, remains intact.

Hoban returned to rebuild the residence, and while work was completed in 1817, he continued to work on additions for several more years. In 1824, he added the South Portico for James Monroe, and he constructed the North Portico for Andrew Jackson from 1829 to 1830. Hoban was born and trained as an architect in Ireland before immigrating to the United States in the 1780s.
The White House was the scene of mourning after the assassination of Pres. While Mary Todd Lincoln lay in her room for five weeks grieving for her husband, many White House holdings were looted. Responding to charges that she had stolen government property when she left the White House, she angrily inventoried all the items she had taken with her, including gifts of quilts and waxworks from well-wishers. According to whitehouse.gov, members of the American public can tour the White House by scheduling a visit through their member of Congress.
Meet the Man Who Designed and Built the White House
Ironically, the Statue of Freedom that sits atop the Capitol dome was made with the help of Philip Reid, a man enslaved by sculptor Thomas Crawford, who was commissioned to build the statue. According to the Architect of the Capitol, Reid was paid $1.25 a day by the federal government for his contributions. In 2005, Congress put together a task force to shed light on the subject. Chief Architect Alfred Mullett based his design on the imposing Second Empire style architecture that was popular in France during the mid-1800s. He gave the Executive Office Building an elaborate facade and a high mansard roof like buildings in Paris. The interior is noted for its remarkable cast iron details and enormous skylights designed by Richard von Ezdorf.

On July 16 President Washington examined at least six designs submitted in the competition. James Hoban, an Irishman whom the president had met a year earlier in Charleston, won the contest. In L’Enfant’s city plan, both the President’s House and the Capitol were to be located at the cardinal points of the city. His original plan proposed that the executive mansion be four times larger than the house that would eventually be built. It would be built on a ridge with a beautiful view overlooking the Potomac toward Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home.

The plans included the location for the future White House, the Capitol to house Congress, and the National Mall. Jefferson planned an arched carriage gate, designed by Latrobe, at the center of the East Wing, but the work was delayed and the mortar would not set in the winter cold. In the spring, the supporting timbers were removed and the stone arch toppled to the ground. The ruins were quietly taken away, leaving a vacant space and an East Wing with two parts for many years. Jefferson often contributed to Latrobe’s designs and occasionally caused the architect some annoyance.
As with many buildings constructed during the founding of Washington D.C., most of the labor was done by enslaved African Americans. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., in Washington, D.C., perhaps the nation's most famous address. Empowered by the Residence Act of 1790, President George Washington chose the exact spot for the 10-square-mile capital, on the Potomac River's east bank and near the Capitol building. Builders laid the White House cornerstone on October 13, 1792, with the Capitol cornerstone following soon after on August 18, 1793. It is understood that the American people ‘own’ the house, and simply loan it to whoever they elect as president for the length of their term.
This led the mansion’s second occupant, Thomas Jefferson, to propose expanding it by constructing two extensions to the east and west to connect the president’s house with adjacent office buildings. The main building still contains the presidential family’s living quarters and various reception rooms, all decorated in styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. The west terrace contains the press briefing room, and the east terrace houses a movie theatre.
Some people might wonder if the US vice president also lives at the White House. Until the 1900s, the vice president actually lived at his private residence, which was not unexpected due to the few duties of the position. Until the 1920s, for instance, vice presidents were not even invited to attend Cabinet meetings. Only in 1974 did Congress decide to make the Naval Observatory, a residence built in 1893 for the superintendent of US Naval Operations (USNO), the residence of the vice president. However, only in 1977 did Vice President Walter Mondale (under President Jimmy Carter) use the Naval Observatory as a primary residence for the first time. While most presidential work is done in the West Wing, the traditional view of the White House that many Americans hold, with the South Portico, is of the Executive Mansion.
Between 1792 and 1800, James Hoban managed the planning and erection of the White House based on his initial drawings. He closely supervised excavation, stone cutting, and building to adapt to the site’s landscape and material availability without compromising the imposing vision. Hoban made several additions to the White House after its damage in the 1814 burning by the British during the War of 1812.
Although pleasing in its proportions and details, Hoban's design for the White House was not an inspired, creative work of architecture. Rather, its origin in a suitable European prototype, expressing dignity but not opulence, was acceptable to most Americans. Throughout the last two centuries, considerable effort has been expended to maintain at least the symbol of republican simplicity originally desired.
