After years of making repairs from flood damage, the gardens have reopened and are ready for you to take your own romantic boat ride among the lily pads. Thanks to its charming historic downtown, antebellum homes, and idyllic waterfront vistas, it's no surprise that Charleston is a popular location for TV shows and movies to film. But one of the most iconic films to use Charleston as its backdrop is undoubtedly The Notebook. While Nicholas Sparks originally set the book in New Bern, North Carolina, the movie places Noah and Allie in Seabrook, South Carolina, a small town about an hour south of Charleston.
The Houses and Filming Locations from the Movie “The Notebook”
When Noah goes off to fight in World War II and Allie becomes involved with another man, it seems like their fairy tale romance is all but dead. Head down King Street in Charleston to see the location of Allie and Noah’s first date, The American Theater. The American Theater purpose when it opened in 1942 was as Charleston’s premier movie house.

There are plenty of other options through Peerspace, like this Greek Revival Southern Plantation in Cochran, Georgia. This home has the kind of authentic Southern charm that would be no stranger to the characters from the movie. When Noah’s renovation project is over, we see the house pretty much as it is today. The production team only added a side porch and the blue shutters to match Allie’s vision for the house.

The property had a 100-year history of being an agricultural hub. A small ferry carried people and crops to the mainland, and the island had its own post office, telephone system, currency, and school. In 1989, five partners purchased the 900-acre tract to preserve the habitat and create a retreat for their families. The house is a private residence that has been in the family for decades, if not generations. It’s a sprawling southern beauty with 4,255 square feet, five bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, and multiple fireplaces.
The scenes depicting Allie’s lavish summer house were filmed in Boone Hall Plantation at Mount Pleasant. Boone Hall is one of the oldest still functional plantations in America with a history that goes back well over three centuries. In the Nicholas Sparks book, the story was set in New Bern, NC, a small river town near the coast.
The scene above is where Allie, Noah and their friends go swim at a lake. The lake is also located inside the Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens property and you can see it from far if you go on the hay ride that is also included with admission. Although they could have used South Carolina beaches for this scene, it was actually filmed in California, at El Matador Beach, in Malibu. Unfortunately, since this is a private residence, they don't offer tours.

Alright, back to reality where handsome men don’t renovate houses to make our childhood dreams come true. There are many unforgettable moments from the Notebook — Allie and Noah lying on the road, their chats in the nursing home, and that kiss, of course.
Cypress Gardens
In Broadway by Design, BroadwayWorld is shining a spotlight on the stellar designs of this Broadway season, show by show. That was shot at Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The geese that were portrayed in the shot weren’t native to the area, so the birds were brought in and had to be trained to follow the boat and appear on screen at the appropriate time. Cypress Garden’s scenes were filmed during January so as to avoid the alligators, which were hibernating at the time. In the case of The Notebook house, the house used for filming does exist and someone currently lives in it.

It’s a private home, so I’m sure I don’t need to remind you not to disturb the residents. With it getting so much screen time you may have been wondering to yourself, “Where is the house from ‘The Notebook’? ” Like many great films, the filmmakers shot on location in South Carolina. When the house is ready, it’s everything she has dreamed about and more. He puts it on sale, and people flock to the plantation offering him huge sums of money. But Noah has no intention to sell the house — he just wants Allie to notice it.
Southern Living magazine toured the property two years ago, with Ms Ailstock showing the journalist around. Meanwhile, while this story is playing out in the past, we also cut back and forth to the present, where an old man named Duke (James Garner) is telling the love story of Noah and Allie to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home. If you haven't seen the movie or read the Nicholas Sparks book that inspired it, I won't spoil how the past and present stories connect. Just know that the film is tailor-made to make you cry your damn eyes out by the time the end credits roll. "Blending the lighting and video designs together was a challenge," added Mackinnon. The rowboat scene in The Notebook was located at Cypress Gardens. This was my favorite spot to tour, and I would definitely visit again. The filming of the house’s exterior was done on Wadmalaw Island, SC, at what’s known as Bears Bluff Plantation or Martins Point. But the town where the movie was supposed to be set was called Seabrook, SC. The summer house of Allie’s monied family is the Boone Hall Plantation, 1235 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant, about eight miles north of Charleston.
