The Houses and Filming Locations from the Movie "The Notebook"

house from the notebook

After years of making repairs from flood damage, the gardens have reopened and are ready for you to take your own romantic boat ride among the lily pads. Thanks to its charming historic downtown, antebellum homes, and idyllic waterfront vistas, it's no surprise that Charleston is a popular location for TV shows and movies to film. But one of the most iconic films to use Charleston as its backdrop is undoubtedly The Notebook. While Nicholas Sparks originally set the book in New Bern, North Carolina, the movie places Noah and Allie in Seabrook, South Carolina, a small town about an hour south of Charleston.

The Houses and Filming Locations from the Movie “The Notebook”

When Noah goes off to fight in World War II and Allie becomes involved with another man, it seems like their fairy tale romance is all but dead. Head down King Street in Charleston to see the location of Allie and Noah’s first date, The American Theater. The American Theater purpose when it opened in 1942 was as Charleston’s premier movie house.

The Martins Point Plantation House in “The Notebook”

There are plenty of other options through Peerspace, like this Greek Revival Southern Plantation in Cochran, Georgia. This home has the kind of authentic Southern charm that would be no stranger to the characters from the movie. When Noah’s renovation project is over, we see the house pretty much as it is today. The production team only added a side porch and the blue shutters to match Allie’s vision for the house.

More movie & TV homes

The property had a 100-year history of being an agricultural hub. A small ferry carried people and crops to the mainland, and the island had its own post office, telephone system, currency, and school. In 1989, five partners purchased the 900-acre tract to preserve the habitat and create a retreat for their families. The house is a private residence that has been in the family for decades, if not generations. It’s a sprawling southern beauty with 4,255 square feet, five bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, and multiple fireplaces.

The scenes depicting Allie’s lavish summer house were filmed in Boone Hall Plantation at Mount Pleasant. Boone Hall is one of the oldest still functional plantations in America with a history that goes back well over three centuries. In the Nicholas Sparks book, the story was set in New Bern, NC, a small river town near the coast.

The scene above is where Allie, Noah and their friends go swim at a lake. The lake is also located inside the Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens property and you can see it from far if you go on the hay ride that is also included with admission. Although they could have used South Carolina beaches for this scene, it was actually filmed in California, at El Matador Beach, in Malibu. Unfortunately, since this is a private residence, they don't offer tours.

See the location where 1940s romance flourished

There are many Peerspace waterfront properties just like this, so you’ll have no problem finding your own “Notebook”-style dream destination. Alright, back to reality where handsome men don’t renovate houses to make our childhood dreams come true. There are many unforgettable moments from the Notebook — Allie and Noah lying on the road, their chats in the nursing home, and that kiss, of course.

Cypress Gardens

In Broadway by Design, BroadwayWorld is shining a spotlight on the stellar designs of this Broadway season, show by show. That was shot at Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. The geese that were portrayed in the shot weren’t native to the area, so the birds were brought in and had to be trained to follow the boat and appear on screen at the appropriate time. Cypress Garden’s scenes were filmed during January so as to avoid the alligators, which were hibernating at the time. In the case of The Notebook house, the house used for filming does exist and someone currently lives in it.

Road construction and maintenance projects

It’s a private home, so I’m sure I don’t need to remind you not to disturb the residents. With it getting so much screen time you may have been wondering to yourself, “Where is the house from ‘The Notebook’? ” Like many great films, the filmmakers shot on location in South Carolina. When the house is ready, it’s everything she has dreamed about and more. He puts it on sale, and people flock to the plantation offering him huge sums of money. But Noah has no intention to sell the house — he just wants Allie to notice it.

Southern Living magazine toured the property two years ago, with Ms Ailstock showing the journalist around. The owner revealed in 2020 that the camera crew only used the exterior of the property, and never ventured inside for any shots. But the house was never a true fixer-upper, although a large part of the 2004 movie showed Noah toiling on it. The scene above is Allie meeting her fiancee Lon at the High Cotton Charleston Restaurant and Noah sees them together from the outside of the restaurant. If you want to dine at this restaurant you can make your reservation here and see the menu here.

Meanwhile, while this story is playing out in the past, we also cut back and forth to the present, where an old man named Duke (James Garner) is telling the love story of Noah and Allie to an old woman (Gena Rowlands) in a nursing home. If you haven't seen the movie or read the Nicholas Sparks book that inspired it, I won't spoil how the past and present stories connect. Just know that the film is tailor-made to make you cry your damn eyes out by the time the end credits roll. "Blending the lighting and video designs together was a challenge," added Mackinnon. "One of our largest challenges was building a set that allows for the full realization of this scene between Noah and Allie in the rain, complete with actual water raining on stage," explained Zinn and Banakis. The scene where Allie and Noah are lying watching the traffic light occurs at King and Mary Streets in downtown Charleston.

The musical features a score by multiplatinum singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson. For scenic designers David Zinn and Brett J. Banakis, it was with the concept of memory. Sorry, Seabrook Islanders, the Old Village neighborhood of Mount Pleasant was the actual setting for the town of Seabrook Island. The 1996 Nicholas Sparks’ novel from which the film was adapted was set in the town of New Bern, North Carolina. The College of Charleston was used for the scenes where Rachel McAdams’ character Allie Hamilton is attending college at New York’s Sarah Lawrence College. Early on, he'd learned to enjoy simple things, things that couldn't be bought, and he had a hard time understanding people who felt otherwise.

The rowboat scene in The Notebook was located at Cypress Gardens. This was my favorite spot to tour, and I would definitely visit again. You have the opportunity to take a self-guided boat tour, which goes through the same area that Noah and Allie explored. The inside of Allie’s summer home was filmed at Williams Mansion, which used to be known as  Calhoun Mansion. As well as seeing the inside of Allie’s Summer Home, the tour will show you what being part of the wealthiest class in Charleston would have felt like. Noah takes Allie boating through a flock of geese at Cypress Gardens, 3030 Cypress Gardens Road, Moncks Corner, another location seen in Cold Mountain and The Patriot, along with Swamp Thing.

Though the exterior was filmed at Boone Hall Plantation, the interior shots of the Hamiltons' summer home were filmed at this historic mansion that dates back to the 1800s. The house is the largest private residence in the entire city and received millions of dollars in renovations to restore it to its former glory. When Allie and Noah meet, her family is staying in their lavish summer house. Boone Hall Plantation served as the setting for all of the exterior scenes that were featured in the film.

It’s also important to mention that the scenes inside Noah’s house were shot elsewhere, with only exterior shots (and porch scenes) being filmed at the Martins Point Plantation in South Carolina. Trace the steps of Noah and Allie's iconic love story by visiting these 7 Charleston landmarks. In The Notebook, Allie and Noah, two people from different worlds, share a lifetime of love despite the forces that threaten to pull them apart in a deeply moving portrait of the enduring power of love.

The filming of the house’s exterior was done on Wadmalaw Island, SC, at what’s known as Bears Bluff Plantation or Martins Point. But the town where the movie was supposed to be set was called Seabrook, SC. The summer house of Allie’s monied family is the Boone Hall Plantation, 1235 Long Point Road, Mount Pleasant, about eight miles north of Charleston.

The Notebook Filming Locations to Visit

This beautiful place is called Oak Avenue and it’s located inside the Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens property. Just like the house, you need to take the tour to be able to see Oak Avenue. The scene above is while Allie and Noah were dating, before she goes to college. It was his first published book and it was inspired by his wife’s grandparents. You can read about Sparks’ wedding day story and how he got inspired by his grandparents-in-law love story by clicking here.

Inside Allie’s Summer Home – The Notebook Film Locations

They fall head over heels in love with each other but, in typical fashion, her parents don’t approve of their relationship. Things go downhill from there, but you probably know that already.

Can you rent the house from “The Notebook”?

Today, ‘The Notebook’ continues to set the benchmark nearly all romance drama films are compared to, and very few of them have managed to pass the test. When it comes to romance and drama movies, very few can hold a candle to American filmmaker Nick Cassavetes’ 2004 film ‘The Notebook’. This was not always the case, however, as the film was only a moderate commercial success and a critical flop at the time of its release. Rather than starting with a run-down house and fixing it up, filmmakers used a beautiful house and then modified it to look distressed for the movie’s early scenes. The three-story house from The Notebook is a classic old plantation home that was built in the 1850s.

The campus really is stunning so it's worth a visit even if you haven't seen The Notebook. Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner provided one of the most iconic scenes in the film when Noah and Allie paddle through the swamp inhabited by swans. If you were wondering where was ‘The Notebook’ filmed, read on to find out everything we know. The story line of ‘The Notebook’ is one of prohibited love between a mill worker named Noah Calhoun and a rich girl called Allison “Allie” Hamilton in 1940s South Carolina. Due to the vast disparity in their social stations, Allie’s parents disapprove of the match.

Love 'The Notebook'? Visit These Charleston, South Carolina Spots

Established in 1803, this charming town is full of unique shops, antiques, and beautiful views of the Charleston Harbor. The principal filming for ‘The Notebook’ took place on location in and around the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina. Production was based out of the now defunct Charleston Naval Shipyard in the northern part of town. However, filming was done all over the city in locations including the Rice Hope Plantation House near the Black River, which doubles up as the nursing home where old Noah and Allie live. The home on Martin’s Point Plantation looked genuinely rundown in the movie. However, according to an article on Sciway, the filmmakers decided to take another approach.

"The story travels back and forth between the past and the present, so the textures and colors of the lighting and video designs tend to oscillate between representing memory and material things," added projection designer Lucy Mackinnon. Lighting designer Ben Stanton, ran with themes from the source material. "We began thinking about this show's scenery through the lens of memory, specifically through the idea of fragmentation and the unreliability of memory," they explained. The scenes in Allie’s house interior was filmed at the Calhoun Mansion. It’s the largest single-family residence in Charleston and the house remains a private residence but it is open to the public daily for touring. Charleston’s TV & Movie Tour by Van visits filming locations from The Notebook and other movies and shows.

Her recent efforts have crept further into popular culture, as she is the first sitting vice president of Barrymore’s program. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian visited the White House last week at the invitation of Harris to celebrate 16 drug offenders President Joe Biden granted clemency. The Original Broadway Cast Recording of new musical The Notebook, based on the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks that inspired the film of the same name, is available now!

The Notebook house, said to be on Windsor Plantation

If you visit Charleston itself, you can see the spectacularly lavish interior used for the home, which is the Calhoun Mansion, Meeting Street. Built in 1876, the Mansion is the largest residence in the city, boasting 35 rooms, a grand ballroom, Japanese water gardens, ornate chandeliers and a 90-foot cupola. Beautifully restored to its original glory, the mansion is a private home but there are daily tours. Part of what makes the setting and summer romance of Noah and Allie for “The Notebook” so romantic and thrilling is the gorgeous South Carolina backdrop.

house from the notebook

Watch Jordan Tyson sing 'If This Is Love' in The Notebook on Broadway. […] "I started that way. But it was just too much. It would have taken years, and so I ended up hiring some people . . . actually a lot of people. But even with them, it was still a lot of work, and most of the time I didn't stop until past midnight." "It was amazing to see the amount of effort and people needed to make a movie."

The run-down and dilapidated home by the water that Noah winds up purchasing and fixing up becomes a running theme throughout the film and even somewhat of a character in its own right. When it came out in 2004, it was hard to tell what a cult sensation “The Notebook” would be. The movie was adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel and wasn’t immediately well-received by critics. However, audiences found so much to love in the bittersweet love story. Many were instantly taken with the chemistry of the two leads, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and it became a breakout role for Gosling.

Most of the movie was filmed in Charleston, however, with Mount Pleasant's Old Village and parts of King Street serving as downtown Seabrook and several private and public homes in the area setting the historically accurate backdrop. The nursing scenes were filmed at Rice Hope (Black River) Plantation in Oatland – Georgetown County. The scene above is when Noah (James Garner) was reading a book containing their love story to Allie (Gena Rowlands) in the present day.

These dumplings are tiny bites of heaven with seasoned pork and hot soup inside flour-based wrappers that explode with flavor (and spilled soup if you’re not careful) when you bite into them. The trick to a great soup dumpling is to make the outer pastry strong enough to hold the soup without breaking, yet tender enough to deliciously melt in your mouth. In summary, Los Angeles, CA, is a city with a rich history, diverse geography, and a dynamic economy. It's a place where the entertainment industry meets technology, fashion, and more. The city's political landscape is predominantly Democratic, reflecting its diverse populace.

IRVING MENU

Whether you dream of traveling to China or simply want some dreamy dumplings, a trip to this local Irving restaurant is sure to bring you good fortune. Food stalls and snack houses are another essential part of the food culture in Shanghai, and Fortune House has plenty of these snacks to choose from in an extensive small bites section of the menu. It’s a long process, but it’s how our families do it, how our grandmas and aunts did it, and how our friends in Shanghai eat them so that’s how we’ll keep making them for you. Los Angeles is famous for its film and entertainment industry, earning it the nickname "The Entertainment Capital of the World."

For adventurers, there are Phoenix Talons, which are chicken feet marinated in hot peppers or sweet & sour jellyfish. Marinated duck makes for an elegant meal, while vegetable-forward dishes like Malan bean curd or crispy cucumber are worthy temptations for vegetarians. There’s nothing magical about it…it’s soup inside of an intricately folded dumpling.

MAIN MENU

It’s simple and yet it’s still lasted almost 200 years since it first originated from the provinces of Shanghai. While we don’t deviate from the original recipes too much, what makes Fortune House different from other establishments is our approach. Our pork broth is simmered for hours and then checked by our Dim Sum chef before it’s prepared to be packed into a dumpling.

Residents can enjoy cuisine from all over the world, visit museums like the Getty Center, or attend live shows and concerts. However, newcomers should be aware that traffic congestion is a significant issue, and public transportation options, while improving, may not cover all areas extensively. Lightly dip the dumpling in your vinegar mix and place it on your soup soon. Poke a hole and let the steaming broth fill up your spoon so you can have a taste — you don’t want to miss it.

Poke a hole and let the steaming broth fill up your spoon so you can have a taste — you don’t want to miss it.

who designed the white house

It wasn’t until Hoban left Ireland and emigrated to America that he had a chance meeting with President George Washington in Charleston in 1791. The meeting led the American president to hire Hoban as the designer of the White House. “It was Hoban who convinced George Washington, a man with a passion for the countryside, of the attractiveness of the grand Irish country house as a model for the United States,” the anthology reads.

The prominent neoclassical national landmark reflects Hoban’s original elegant design over 200 years after its construction. Crossroads of History: Ancient Jordan with Dan Snow

L’Enfant envisioned a majestic house roughly four times the size of the current White House. The residence of the president of the United States is a large neoclassical federal-style mansion, with details echoing Greek classical architecture. Despite two hundred years of disaster, discord, and remodelings, the original design of the immigrant Irish builder, James Hoban, remains intact.

Executive Residence

Hoban returned to rebuild the residence, and while work was completed in 1817, he continued to work on additions for several more years. In 1824, he added the South Portico for James Monroe, and he constructed the North Portico for Andrew Jackson from 1829 to 1830. Hoban was born and trained as an architect in Ireland before immigrating to the United States in the 1780s.

The White House was the scene of mourning after the assassination of Pres. While Mary Todd Lincoln lay in her room for five weeks grieving for her husband, many White House holdings were looted. Responding to charges that she had stolen government property when she left the White House, she angrily inventoried all the items she had taken with her, including gifts of quilts and waxworks from well-wishers. According to whitehouse.gov, members of the American public can tour the White House by scheduling a visit through their member of Congress.

Meet the Man Who Designed and Built the White House

Ironically, the Statue of Freedom that sits atop the Capitol dome was made with the help of Philip Reid, a man enslaved by sculptor Thomas Crawford, who was commissioned to build the statue. According to the Architect of the Capitol, Reid was paid $1.25 a day by the federal government for his contributions. In 2005, Congress put together a task force to shed light on the subject. Chief Architect Alfred Mullett based his design on the imposing Second Empire style architecture that was popular in France during the mid-1800s. He gave the Executive Office Building an elaborate facade and a high mansard roof like buildings in Paris. The interior is noted for its remarkable cast iron details and enormous skylights designed by Richard von Ezdorf.

The deep purple, like on this Berkshires ranch house of designer Annie Selke, has a lasting warmth that’ll make anyone who enters feel welcome. Pair bright versions of them as exterior house colors, and your home will exude a lively energy that’s simultaneously calming. For this San Francisco Victorian, Kelly Finley used Benjamin Moore Imperial Yellow to blend the garage and siding, and Bedford Blue to cover the stairs and front door.

On July 16 President Washington examined at least six designs submitted in the competition. James Hoban, an Irishman whom the president had met a year earlier in Charleston, won the contest. In L’Enfant’s city plan, both the President’s House and the Capitol were to be located at the cardinal points of the city. His original plan proposed that the executive mansion be four times larger than the house that would eventually be built. It would be built on a ridge with a beautiful view overlooking the Potomac toward Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home.

The National Archives Building

Fourthly, the principle of sustainable design has been incorporated into the maintenance and modernization of the White House. This involves optimizing energy performance, protecting and conserving water, enhancing the indoor environment, and reducing the environmental impact of materials. Lastly, the principle of resilience is also employed in constructing the White House.

The plans included the location for the future White House, the Capitol to house Congress, and the National Mall. Jefferson planned an arched carriage gate, designed by Latrobe, at the center of the East Wing, but the work was delayed and the mortar would not set in the winter cold. In the spring, the supporting timbers were removed and the stone arch toppled to the ground. The ruins were quietly taken away, leaving a vacant space and an East Wing with two parts for many years. Jefferson often contributed to Latrobe’s designs and occasionally caused the architect some annoyance.

As with many buildings constructed during the founding of Washington D.C., most of the labor was done by enslaved African Americans. The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., in Washington, D.C., perhaps the nation's most famous address. Empowered by the Residence Act of 1790, President George Washington chose the exact spot for the 10-square-mile capital, on the Potomac River's east bank and near the Capitol building. Builders laid the White House cornerstone on October 13, 1792, with the Capitol cornerstone following soon after on August 18, 1793. It is understood that the American people ‘own’ the house, and simply loan it to whoever they elect as president for the length of their term.

This led the mansion’s second occupant, Thomas Jefferson, to propose expanding it by constructing two extensions to the east and west to connect the president’s house with adjacent office buildings. The main building still contains the presidential family’s living quarters and various reception rooms, all decorated in styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. The west terrace contains the press briefing room, and the east terrace houses a movie theatre.

Some people might wonder if the US vice president also lives at the White House. Until the 1900s, the vice president actually lived at his private residence, which was not unexpected due to the few duties of the position. Until the 1920s, for instance, vice presidents were not even invited to attend Cabinet meetings. Only in 1974 did Congress decide to make the Naval Observatory, a residence built in 1893 for the superintendent of US Naval Operations (USNO), the residence of the vice president. However, only in 1977 did Vice President Walter Mondale (under President Jimmy Carter) use the Naval Observatory as a primary residence for the first time. While most presidential work is done in the West Wing, the traditional view of the White House that many Americans hold, with the South Portico, is of the Executive Mansion.

Between 1792 and 1800, James Hoban managed the planning and erection of the White House based on his initial drawings. He closely supervised excavation, stone cutting, and building to adapt to the site’s landscape and material availability without compromising the imposing vision. Hoban made several additions to the White House after its damage in the 1814 burning by the British during the War of 1812.

Although pleasing in its proportions and details, Hoban's design for the White House was not an inspired, creative work of architecture. Rather, its origin in a suitable European prototype, expressing dignity but not opulence, was acceptable to most Americans. Throughout the last two centuries, considerable effort has been expended to maintain at least the symbol of republican simplicity originally desired.

This renovation reflected the Beaux-Arts style, influenced by European precedents in art and design. In 1792, Hoban entered a competition organized by the Commissioners of Public Buildings to design the presidential mansion and submitted preliminary drawings for the residence. Out of the submitted entries, President George Washington selected Hoban’s neoclassical design for the White House likely because it aligned with the new republic’s vision of itself connected to Ancient Greek and Roman democratic ideals. The White House was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, who won a design competition held in 1792. Hoban oversaw the construction process involving enslaved laborers, local D.C. After the White House was set on fire during the War of 1812, Hoban was appointed to rebuild it.

“The Back Building”

Latrobe also redecorated the interiors, landscaped the grounds in a picturesque manner with terraces, and added low, single-story wings to provide for storage and other household necessities (as at Monticello) on the east and west. Hoban was again in charge of construction between 1815 and 1818, rebuilding after the August 1814 burning by British troops. The White House serves as the official residence and workplace of the President of the United States.

Was It Always Called the White House?

This highlights the role of architecture in reflecting and shaping national identity. Lastly, the White House underscores the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly design. Over the years, various modifications have been made to the building to improve its energy efficiency, such as adding a solarium during the Coolidge administration. This underlines the role of architecture in promoting environmental sustainability.

When President Harry S. Truman moved into the White House in 1945, he became concerned about the state of the building. In 1947, a chandelier in the Blue Room almost fell on Bess Truman and her guests from the Daughters of the American Revolution, and in 1948, the leg of Margaret Truman’s piano pierced through the floor of what is now the private dining room. Engineers confirmed that the building was at risk of collapse, and Truman and his family relocated to Blair House, the president’s guesthouse located nearby at 1651 Pennsylvania Ave. Set on 18 acres of land, the White House is made up of the Executive Residence, the East Wing, and the West Wing, with its famous Oval Office. Today, the residence includes six levels with 132 rooms, including 16 family and guest rooms and 35 bathrooms, and is spread over 55,000 square feet. The White House has been home to every president from John Adams to Joe Biden, and it is an enduring symbol of democracy and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, attracting 500,000 visitors annually.

But what documentation exists today shows that many of Washington, D.C.’s most iconic government buildings, including the White House, were built by enslaved people. The White House and its landscaped grounds occupy 18 acres (7.2 hectares). Since the administration of George Washington (1789–97), who occupied presidential residences in New York and Philadelphia, every American president has resided at the White House. Originally called the “President’s Palace” on early maps, the building was officially named the Executive Mansion in 1810 in order to avoid connotations of royalty.

It includes a billiards room, a workout room, a solarium, and a music room added by the Clinton family. Above the pantry, the Usher’s office, and the lobby elevator on the first floor is a mezzanine that includes some small closets, another pantry for pastries, and the clock room. Except for the entrance hall, which ceiling is 5.80 meters high, and the east room at 6.10 meters, the rest of the ceilings rise to 5.50 meters. The first floor of the White House is often called the “State Floor” because this is where formal state receptions are held. This floor is on the same level as the second floor of the West Wing and the East Wing, as the residence sits on the upper floor.

White House Down: War of 1812 & Burning of Washington

Historic payroll reports document that many of the workers who built the White House were African Americans—some free and some enslaved. Working alongside white laborers, the African American workers cut sandstone at the quarry in Aquia, Virginia. They also dug the footings for the White House, built the foundations, and fired bricks for the interior walls. During the War of 1812, the United States burned Parliament Buildings in Ontario, Canada. So, in 1814, the British Army retaliated by setting fire to much of Washington, including the White House. The inside of the presidential structure was destroyed and the exterior walls were badly charred.

Who Was the First President to Live in the White House?

The White House was designed by Irish architect James Hoban, whose winning design was selected by President George Washington in a competition for the honor of designing the home of the American president. The original laborers and stonecutter constructing the White House were African American slaves hired from their owners. Many other cultures were represented at the construction site; most of the crews were comprised of immigrant skilled workers and independent laborers. As an example of this cultural diversity, the stone masons were Scots and the designer of the President’s house was Irish. By 1800 the White House was occupied, but it was not completed until 1803. In 1807 Benjamin Henry Latrobe redesigned the north and south fronts, adding monumental porticoes that were carried out in slightly altered form by Hoban in 1824 (south) and 1829 (north).

The White House’s symmetrical façade with towering Roman-inspired columns, triangular pediments, and decorative dentils and metopes reflected classical Greco-Roman elements that signified the democratic ambitions of the new federal government. When architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant drafted the original plans for Washington, D.C., he called for an elaborate and enormous presidential palace. L'Enfant's vision was discarded and architects James Hoban and Benjamin Henry Latrobe designed a much smaller, more humble home. Still, the White House was grand for its time and the biggest by far in the new nation.

Historians believe Hoban based his White House design on a local Dublin residence, the Leinster House, the Georgian style home of the Dukes of Leinster. The Leinster House in Ireland is now the seat of the Irish Parliament, but before that it likely inspired the White House. Ohio-born architect Cass Gilbert borrowed from the architecture of ancient Rome when he designed the building.

The blaze destroyed much of the interior and charred most of the exterior. Though President Washington oversaw the White House’s plan and build, he never lived there. Instead, it was first lived in by President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, the latter of whom was disappointed at its unfinished state, and used the East Room as a place to hang her washing rather than entertain the public. His 3-story, 9-bay original submission was altered into this 2-story, 11-bay design. The White House requires 2,170 liters of paint to cover its exterior surface.

The building designed by Hoban was based on the first two floors of the Leinster House he had already built in Dublin, now the headquarters of the Irish Parliament. August of 1814 saw British raids along America’s coast, with the Brits emboldened by their recent defeat of Napoleon in Europe and a desire to keep the United States focused away from Canada. On August 24, the British defeated the Americans at the Battle of Bladensburg and then moved on to Washington DC. In retaliation for the American burning of York, Ontario the previous year, the British forces set fire to the White House, the Capitol, and other government buildings. Despite all his tweaks, Jefferson did not change the appearance of the house substantially. Although this was not the residence that he would have built himself, he recognized it as part of George Washington’s legacy and saw the need for continuity.

Large glass greenhouses were built on both sides of the mansion, providing flowers and plants of all kinds, as well as a pleasant place to talk or read a book. The construction of a mansion for the president’s family and his staff was approved when Congress established the District of Columbia as the permanent capital of the United States on July 16, 1790. Construction began on October 13, 1792, when the cornerstone was laid, and although Washington never lived in the presidential house, he supervised its construction. Most of the work was done by African Americans, some free, others enslaved.

It has a columned central entrance on each side with a triangular pediment above the two-story porch, decorated with dentils and metopes. The columns are stately Roman-influenced Tuscan order, while the south façade boasts Ionic order columns. The walls have rusticated stone on the two lower floors, with smooth dressing on the upper floor. The neoclassical elements also extend to the interiors with features like curving walls, high domed ceilings, and marbled ionic column capitals in the Oval Room. The reasons behind the neoclassical style during the early Republic period were aesthetic and ideological.

An arch he had built on the east side, marking the entrance to the guest wing, collapsed, but was later rebuilt with a different design and survived until 1859. Originally, plans for a "President's Palace" were developed by the French-born artist and engineer Pierre Charles L’Enfant. Working with George Washington to design a capital city for the new nation, L'Enfant envisioned a majestic home approximately four times the size of the present White House. Many an American president has battled for the privilege to live at the nation's most prestigious address.

After the republic almost crumbled during Shays’ Rebellion ( ), many people wanted to reform the Articles to provide more executive power to maintain order and security. George Washington, the hero of the American Revolutionary War, agreed to preside over this convention when it met in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787. 1791 To appease northern and southern interests, President George Washington selects the site for the capital city. George Washington died on December 14, 1799, before the President’s House was finished. The building begun in 1792 had taken eight years to be ready to house the president, but Washington would not live to see it. On November 1, 1800, John Adams became the first president to occupy the building, as required by the Residence Act, but he lived there just four months before he lost office.
